The portrayal of space and space exploration has been a major inspiration for many people involved in actual projects today. Presentations of space, such as how it could be travelled to, or inhabited in the future are important as they help shape the cultural imagination of outer space. From a story telling perspective, space has been revisited to present particular narrative: ominous visitors (war of the worlds, the day the earth stood still, invaders among us (invasion of the body snatchers) Very common of science fiction films depicting the red scare ad fears of communism in 1950s/60s: racial issues (district 9, planet of the apes) Aliens presented as the other to demonstrate racial conflicts: terror and the unknown (alien franchise) Destination moon was an early attempt to realistically portray humans travelling to the moon. Even today, the movie holds up decently well, and the mission design (aside from the single stage rocket) is a feasible approach to lunar exploration.
