Definition of space (added from last lecture) A chapter of the cold war: the space race didn"t happen in isolation. Competition between the us and the soviet union following wwii. The technology needed to get to space was a natural progression of the weapons used in wwii. Arguably, the space race wasn"t really about space exploration, but more so the success of the space race was for propaganda purposes and a demonstration of technological might. Keep in mind the broader context of the cold war. Combatting politics democracy/capitalism vs. communism: after suptnik. After the success of sputnik 1, the soviets launched sputnik 2 with the launch of the dog lika into space. Cat interlude there has been a cat in space as well. Felicette was launched into space abroad a french rocket in 1963: the astrocat , survived the flight, did not orbit the earth, us response to sputnik.
