Scientific value was completely dependent on the landing site. Lunar orbiters were things that orbited the moon taking pictures of landing sites. Know the sequence of what apollo missions did and how each one took it a little further than the previous one. Command module carries the people, lunar module detaches and lands on the moon. Apollo 11 missed its landing site by a few kms but it didn"t matter because the sole goal was to land and come home to earth safely.
