Geography 2010A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Desiccation, Subarctic Climate, Carolinian Forest
Document Summary
We see more natural vegetation in the prairies. Major natural vegetation types in canada: forests, grasslands. Forest: deciduous forests are composed of trees that lose their leaves each winter; ex. Broadleaf forest and carolinian forest (southern ontario: coniferous forests are composed of evergreen trees; ex. Tundra: these small plants survive in harsh climates; they reproduce by runners (off shoots of the main plant); they grow along the surface, they do(cid:374)"t grow fro(cid:373) seeds, they are found in the arctic and alpine areas. Tundra plants have shallow root systems due to permafrost environment (shallow roots due to the permafrost underneath) The leaves of the plants are waxy in order to reduce moisture loss. Krumholz: a plant that grows sideways formation because harsh dry winds desiccate the upper part of the plant. Line separating the skin color to orange/yellow line this is the tree line and north of this line you will not see any trees because of the continuous permafrost.
