Quebec ranks second among the six regions in terms of economic output and population. It is the largest province in area. The st. lawrence river gures prominently in quebec"s history and economy. Quebec"s culture derives from the historical experience of francophones living in the area for over 400 years. French is the mother tongue of 77% of quebec residents. The terms quebecois (in french) and quebecers (in english) have both evolved to refer to any inhabitant of quebec regardless of mother tongue. Non-francophone residents tend to be clustered in speci c parts of the province. These provincial laws require businesses to use french. The laws have helped maintain french as the primary language in the region. Most immigrants to quebec today who speak neither french nor english choose to learn. Generally concentrated in montreal, the eastern township, and the ottawa river valley. Inuit and cree form the majority of the population of northern quebec.
