Drawn animation = oldest type of animated film, these were physical drawings which were then photographed as cartoon images. Clear rectangular sheets called celluloids that would allow for layering. Drawings on cels would be layered then photographed, to create the illusion of movement. 1930s -- 1950s, snow white / bugs bunnny, etc. made with cels. Traditional cel animation = 7 minutes to fit into short sections. Renders in full detail, uses non repetitive movement. *can create animations without a camera, because you can directly manipulate film (draw on it etc ) 2d animation ---> cut-outs w/ flat puppets, etc . Can manipulate these cut out images frame by frame. *pixilation = frame by frame manipulation of people and ordinary objects. When actors freeze in a pose for the exposure of one frame, then move slightly and freeze again, creates a jerky unnatural movement. Illusion of solid, sculptural cartoons created with computer imaging (toy story)
