Family Studies 1015A/B Lecture 9: Gender Differences in Verbal Communication

17 views4 pages

Document Summary

Women discuss their feelings and gossip about others more often than men do. Men tend to stick to more impersonal matters such as sports, and they seek a few laughs instead of support and counsel. As a result, men have less intimate and personal conversations with each other than women do. So men tend to offer female partners more intimate interaction than their male partners. Nevertheless, when we"re chatting online using written messages, we usually can"t tell the sexes apart. Women tend to speak less forcefully than men do, less certain and more indirect but they are not more talkative overall. Men talked longer, brooking no interruption; women speak more often but produce fewer monologues. Our personality are apparent in words we use. High level of expressivity will lead to intimate verbal communication with trusted partners: dysfunctional communication. Unhappy partners do a poor job of saying what they mean.
