Describe the general composition of waste, major environmental issues associated with it and how landfills try to protect the environment while disposing of waste. Synthesize the environmental effects of plastic pollution, its composition and how consumer activism has influenced its management. Discuss the current state of recycling and describe the process of a life-cycle analysis. Exam q: many pollutants are transported through the water cycle. List some of the different pollutants (point and nonpoint source) that enter the water cycle and briefly discuss the environmental impact of each pollutant. Define point source (can trace back to direct source) vs. nonpoint source (multiple sources, harder to find origin) Point source is easy to find and target where it is coming from easier to come up with a solution to fix the problem. Oral contraceptives leading to fish feminization (ex. Fertilizer runoff, laundry detergent, nutrient feedwater that can lead to eutrophication. Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides causing acid rain.
