Lecture 1: neuromancer is a cyberpunk novel. It offers a shock to our understanding of the world. The world becomes such an easy close and destruction. Our anxiety about the future and how it will not go on forever: problem with utopian literature: thinks about the possibility of creating a perfect society all the while knowing that a perfect society cannot be achieved. New wave wants to renovate science fiction: final big change in the 80"s called cyberpunk. Bringing of cybernetic internet stuff (whole new wave of technology in the 80s) combined with punk sensibility of anti-establishment and anti-government. Radical change in technology at the time. Attitude of challenging society, corporations, and social norms. 1: so many themes and tropes that it is hard to deduce as what science fiction is actually about. Often reduced to paraliterature because of this, something that is not real literature, repeats.
