White is famous not only for writing charlotte"s web but also as the co- author of the elements of style, a good, concise guide to effective writing. White is very careful with language, aware of the way words sound as well as what they mean. His interest in the power of language is shown in his characterization of charlotte. The following morning, charlotte introduces herself to wilbur saying, salutations and then defines the word for him. Throughout the novel, she displays her ability to define unusual words such as gullible ( easy to fool ) and versatile (she can do more than just sit around on her web all day). White did not believe in using a restricted vocabulary in children"s literature; instead of limiting himself to a particular reading level, he incorporates challenging words, taking the opportunity to explain what these words mean.
