Closure, conclusion draw action of story to a logical end. Orients tells us where we are in space & time. Establishes the endings where we might go. A beginning is a cut into the flux of life. Beginnings are part of the rage for order. Frank kermode: a rage for order, fundamental to the human condition. Use narrative to impose memory & structure on the world. Use beginnings & endings to impose shape on disorder: we are born in the middle of a story and we die in the middle of a story. Beginnings are necessary fictions: ex: the ticking of a clock. Want to define the interim, the span. Beginnings & endings humanize time: something repellent in the heart of time, flows continuously.
