2 traumas in his life that defined him as a poet and a person. His poetry becomes a space of mourning/melancholy. Only after the fact (retrospectively) that we can piece together the events on trauma: maud gonne (1889) He fell in deep love with this woman, she did not reciprocate his desire. This instance defined him as a poet because without the rejection his art would not be what it is. Perhaps he wouldn"t even be an artist: more complicated: born in 1865, modernism. Yeats was a person who needed to believe, the desire to believe in god for him was overbearing. He was born into a time that saw the death of religion , yeats blamed science precisely for this death. Belief is something that we can enter into if it is properly fostered; if the grounds are destroyed, belief is gone. He argues that there are 28 types of personality, we all are one of those 28 types.
