Document Summary

Most famous is in ovid"s collection of stories called the metamorphosis . Maiden named phylomella (lover of song) had a sister called procnae who moved away in marriage. Phylomella goes to visit her sister, but is kidnapped by her sister"s husband before she could and raped her/locked her in a shed. To prevent her from telling what happened he ripped out her tongue. She was eventually able to communicate what happened by weaving a tapestry and secretly gifting it to her sister. Procnae got revenge on her husband by killing her son, baking him in a pie and serving him to her husband. Then she and phylomella told him what he had done (eat his son) The gods eventually came and turned each of them into a bird and phylomella became a nightingale, famous for its song which is derived from sadness/violence.
