Earth Sciences 1022A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Continental Shelf, James Hutton, Hazardous Waste
Document Summary
Geology (study of earth) is important for energy and natural resources, solving environmental problems, building cities and highways, predicting and protecting against natural disasters like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, floods, etc. Most things we buy come from materials out of the ground. We are all effected by geology at some point. Fundamental principle: the present is the key to the past. In his work, it states that physical, chemical and biologic laws that operate today have also operated in the geologic past. Geologic time is measured in billions of years. Some religions believe it to be around 5,000 years. 150 years to count in seconds, to reach the age of the earth. Relative dating: events are placed in their proper sequence or order without knowing their age in years. In layers of sedimentary rocks or lava flows, the youngest layer is on top and the oldest is on the bottom.
