Disability Studies 1010A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: World Health Assembly, Paradigm Shift, Intersectionality
Document Summary
Hello, my name is: labels, language & disability. Originally there were 2 pieces of international legislation. A nine-year process, involving hundreds of countries. Ratified on may 22 2001, at the world health assembly. Focus on level of function over medical diagnosis/prognosis (came from who which means it was mostly doctors that focus on medical stuff rather than function) Escapes previous disease focus to consider the person in his or her world": physical barriers, socioeconomic conditions, etc. all considered. Elevates mental illness to the same level as physical disability. Criticism: no legislative power, reinforces medical authority, a linguistic shift (impairment to function), not a paradigm shift, etc. A political choice, sometimes connected to disability pride (ie: loud & proud, etc. ) Society disables us, therefore we are disabled people. Born out of the politically correct" movement in north america. Sometimes called people first" language we are people who have disabilities (also shortens to pwds) Don"t use retarded, handicapped, cripples, challenged, etc.
