We must understand what a computer is, what a connection is, what communication is. There have always been computers, just not by our definition. There"s always been a need to calculate navigation for mariners (tides), star tables for astronomers (movement), life insurance tables for actuaries, civil engineering tables. As knowledge increases, so does the need for calculations. Calculations were done by hand by people; a computer was a job type (term was first coined in 1613), these people were also known as reckoners. Better methods are always introduced to make calculations more accurate and easier; this is done through mechanical means (logarithmic tables and trigonometrical tables) We then moved onto napier bones (1617), this was a manually-operated calculating device created to aid in difficult calculations.
