Andra: man (main meaning) hero, husband (other meanings) To be designated as a good (virtuous) wife, she had to be faithful, bear children, weave textiles (anchors a woman to a space inside the house, upright loom) However, she weaves all day and stays up all night undoing the work that she does in order to stay faithful to odysseus. Penelope is always faithful to odysseus, as she weaves she has a statue of him present in front of her. Most of the time odysseus is away, he is being held back by women: circe. Spends a year with her: calypso. Calypso is derived from a greek word that means hidden or vanished . After odysseus spends every day weeping on the beach and longing for home, the gods tell calypso that she must let odysseus go back to ithaca: sirens. She interprets this as the eagle being her husband and the geese being her suitors.
