Document Summary
White and red lead: nothing is sold solely as a cosmetic. Everything had multiple purposes: used lead even though they knew it was poisonous. The more it was used the worse your skin would look underneath: this was used until the early 19th century. Kohl or soot: scraped out of a chimney or a lamp. Women shaven / depilated as well: every part of their body except for their head. Married women would wear their hair up with hair pins: wax, creams, resin, burn. Adornment is devious: only adorning to attract men, peril to man as it would entrance the man and hide the woman"s true nature. Alabastron (pl. alabastra) vs. the aryballos: have survived in great quantity due to the fact that they would be kept in graves, alabastron is the female perfume container, aryballos is the male perfume container. Dipstick: wood or bone that would get coated in oil.
