Massala was the antagonist in the race and had a metal spike/blade on his chariot that could damage other chariots inaccurate. Charioteers are holding reigns in hands rather than tied to belt and chariots were war chariots and very heavy unlike actual roman chariots. Traditionally, romans were adverse to classical greek athletics.
