Highly literary, we know the authors and we know about them. They don"t come out of a shared oral tradition. Lived through a civil war that ended with augustus" rule (27 bce ff), valued peace. Greek models are very important; the values reflected in his poetry are roman. When he died he hadn"t quite finished the aeneid, on his death bed he wanted it to be destroyed, it was against his wishes that the poem was preserved. Major themes: fugitives, rome, fathers and sons (what they owe to one another; possessions and their name), piety, personal sacrifice (pietas), destructive emotions (passion and rage), and divine interest in the political world. Poem of aeneas, a fugitive from troy to rome. He is the son of anchises (trojan warrior) and. Venus (aphrodite), he marries creusa and in troy they have the son ascanius (iulus).
