King pittheus invites aegeus of athens to sleep with daughter aethra. After aegeus sleeps with aethra she goes to cleanse herself in the sea. Poseidon impregnates her while she is in the sea. Aethra - gives birth to theseus (son of a god who will inherit a kingdom from his earthly father) He moves a boulder, uncovering the sword and sandals left there by aegeus. When he can move that boulder he is ready to become a man. He travels to athens to claim his place in the ruling family. Travels through non-civilized country side and cleans the road of threats for others, thus demonstrating his heroic qualities and authorizing his right to rule. Sinis, "the bender", tied victims to pine-trees tearing them apart. Scrion, kicked travelers over a cliff to be eaten by sea-monster or turtle. Prosctrustes the stretcher, made travelers fit his bed by stretching or cutting them.
