Classical Studies 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Theogony, Odysseus, Shame Society
Document Summary
Troy the last gasp of the bronze age. The site was discovered in 1820 and excavated by schliemann from 1870-90. The most influential excavations were carried out by carl blegen of the university of cincinnati (1932-1938). Argued that troy was not the city homer made it out to be, but a quiet trading town. His take was the scholarly norm until recently. Anatolian archaeology developed into its own subfield while classical archaeology remained unaware of it. More than 46 building phases, which are grouped in 9 bands (sometimes called cities"). Priam"s troy" has been identified with layers vi-viib. Blegen"s image of troy since replaced when korfmann, using ground-penetrating radar, found evidence of a city" covering much more ground with extensive fortifications. Only one very small piece of text found at troy. A small scribe"s seal (used to sign" documents). In a language called luvian, a main hittite language. Aligns troy, at least bureaucratically, with the hittite empire.
