The man still owned the whole family, but the wife was not part of the family but the kids were. It is agreed that there should be proper morals between the man and woman. (attraction, affection etc. ) Widows- once your husband dies, you don"t remarry. You simply stay with his family and raise the children. However in aristocratic families this was often not obeyed.
