Mycenae is northeast peloponnese, in the area of argolis/argolid, head town of the area. It is a bronze age citadel, fortified on a hillside. Pausanias visited and provided info - 1000s years old, buried and eroded. Schliemann visited and he only found what was the tip of the iceberg. It was always partly visible known by the people who lived there. Pausanias travelled there and focused on writing about the lion"s gate (main gate to the citadel. He has gone to tiryns and argos and said this was also built by the cyclopes. Classical era people and beyond couldn"t believe the walls were built by people because they were so heavy at 50 ton per block. Mycenae was one of many late bronze age citadels that were similar in style. it was the first excavated and gives the name to the culture mycenaean - others include tiryns, pylos, athens, vapheio, thebes.
