An effective leader must be able to influence those individuals to work toward
achieving the organization's goals

Path-Goal Theory of Leadership
The role of the leader is to:
Assist followers in attaining the followers’ goals

Provide the necessary direction and support to ensure that followers’
goals are compatible with the organization’s goals
○

Effective leaders:
Clarify/clear the path for followers to achieve those goals
○
Provide a positive impact on followers' motivation, performance,
satisfaction
○

If a leader clarifies/links path between effort and performance and between
performance and reward an rewards the followers with things that they value,
then followers will be motivated

Styles of Leader Behavior
Directive
Gives specific guidance, tasks, schedules
Supportive
Treats members as equals, friends
Participative
Consults and uses suggestions of followers
Achievement-oriented
Sets goals and expects improvement
Must consider two situational variable (personal characteristics of the followers
and environmental factors) to determine which leadership style is appropriate

Follower's perception of their ability or relevant experience to do a
given task
