An effective leader must be able to influence those individuals to work toward
achieving the organization's goals
Path-Goal Theory of Leadership
The role of the leader is to:
Assist followers in attaining the followers’ goals
Provide the necessary direction and support to ensure that followers’
goals are compatible with the organization’s goals
Effective leaders:
Clarify/clear the path for followers to achieve those goals
Provide a positive impact on followers' motivation, performance,
satisfaction
If a leader clarifies/links path between effort and performance and between
performance and reward an rewards the followers with things that they value,
then followers will be motivated
Styles of Leader Behavior
Directive
Gives specific guidance, tasks, schedules
Supportive
Treats members as equals, friends
Participative
Consults and uses suggestions of followers
Achievement-oriented
Sets goals and expects improvement
Must consider two situational variable (personal characteristics of the followers
and environmental factors) to determine which leadership style is appropriate
Personal characteristics:
Follower's perception of their ability or relevant experience to do a
given task

Follower's locus of control by believing their actions can have
influence
§
Follower's level of authoritarianism by willing to accept the
influence of others

§
Environmental factors are beyond the control of followers but are
important to their satisfaction and ability to perform effectively
Formal authority system in the organization -Extent to which the
system is well defines through rules and a clear chain of command

Nature of work groups - Extent to which group norms/dynamics
allow followers to receive necessary cues to do the job and desired
rewards from someone other than the leader
§
Nature of tasks - Extent to which the task is clearly defined, and
