Document Summary

E. g. a plant provides photosynthesis; loss of water and oxygen. Need to constantly supply oxygen to mitochondria, and get co2 and water out. Something that absorbs or takes up a gas or solutes from its environment is considered a sink. Think of mitochondria as being an oxygen sink ; source of the oxygen is the atmosphere around it, mito depletes oxygen around them and results in diffusion to bring more oxygen towards it. Dependent on the environment for the respiratory ; mitochondria want carbohydrate, amino acids and oxygen. Diffusion is good in that it"s free; don"t need to spend any energy towards it. Diffusion alone is too slow to maintain the rates of gas exchange needed to support the metabolism of larger organisms. For big organisms, can"t rely on diffusion to keep up metabolic rate. Many animals are small, rotifer smallest animal- may be able to rely on diffusion as it"s only effective in small distances.
