Water and fluid transport: moving fluids in plants: we will specifically be talking about how water is moved in plants from the roots up to the leaves, where it"s lost through transpiration. And phloem is moving materials from wherever they are produced (source tissue) to wherever they"re being used (sink tissue) Xylem: made of tracheids & vessel elements, these are dead cells. Both tracheids and vessel elements are interconnected (they line up next to each other laterally and that"s both the case for both of these_ For tracheids, at the very end of them they taper down and what you"ll get is them lining up edge to edge so that water can flow through the pits from one tracheid to the next one. Tracheids: secondary in angiosperms, primary vessel type in gymnosperms, have permeable pit membranes, allows lateral movement to provide long connected vessels.
