Biology 2601A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Woody Plant, Heat Capacity, Water Potential
Document Summary
Lecture 8 water and fluid: moving fluids in plants. Diffusion & osmosis: diffusion: spontaneous movement of substances from regions of higher to lower concentration, net movement of molecules, most effective over short distances, osmosis: diffusion of water across a selectively permeable barrier. If the concentration of solutes is greater within the cell than in the solution surrounding it, water will diffuse into the cell but the solutes are unable to diffuse out of the cell. Water moves through plants through the vascular system, which is comprised of xylem and phloem. 4 main critical tissue types: water is transported to the centre of the root: xylem, phloem, endodermis: important from a solid control point of view, pericycle/cambium: involved in cell division. In the root: xylem and phloem are on the inside. Translocates water and inorganic nutrients from the roots to the leaves (unidirectional) Dead cells at maturity: no cytoplasm, no nucleus, no cellular contents.
