Poikilotherm: an animal in which the body temperature is determined by equilibration with the thermal conditions in the environment. Going with the flow is better in some places than others. Internal constancy and the physiological regulatory systems that automatically make adjustments to maintain it . The condition of a relatively stable internal physiological environment, usually involving extensive feedback mechanisms . Body temp--> sensor that senses body temperature --> regulation --> body temp (feedback loop) Works to return the value back to setpoint. > increase heat loss (sweat, pant) --> body cools toward setpoint. -> decrease heat loss increase heat production --> body heat toward setpoint. Many cell signalling pathways that regulate cytoplasm composition. Maintaining rates of reaction by altering pathways and enzymes. Maintain performance in the face of varying conditions. Require shift away from acute response environment is imposing on organism. Compensation: plasticity occurs on the order of hours to days to weeks.
