When bird dives into the water, it can forage down there for a long time without its body temp changing produces a lot of metabolic heat. Poikilotherms are animals in which body temp is determined by equilibration with the thermal conditions in the environment. Penguin lives in sub-antarctic islands very cold. Ecotherms don"t generate internal heat, but aren"t just victims of their environment.
