Document Summary

Energy: capacity of a physical system to do work. Potential energy: stored energy: molecules have stored chemical potential energy, energy stored in their bonds. If left alone (without energy), most things in the body will break down. Important for the growth and development of cells: body needs food to decrease entropy. In order to decrease entropy inside your body (a system), entropy must be increased in the surroundings: entropy decreasing in body cause entropy increasing in the universe. Energy types which energies are kinetic and which are potential: chemical, thermal, electrical, electromagnetic radiation, type of kinetic energy, mechanical, sound. First law of thermodynamics: energy can be transformed from one form to another but cannot be created or destroyed, total amount of energy in a system and its surroundings remain constant. The lost energy is the energy that contributes to increasing entropy: can decrease entropy but it requires work to be done ex: pumping molecules against the concentration gradient using atp.
