Document Summary

Cycle 1 - lecture #4 alzheimer"s disease and light and life. Neurodegenerative disease: neuro = neurones, degenerative = loss or death. Progressive disease: once you get the onset, difficult to revert it back to normal. The two pathological hallmarks: beta amyloid plaques (app) Outside the neurones: neurofibrillary tangles (tau) First party of brain affected by loss of neurones is hippocampus that is involved in making a membrane: that"s why loss of memory is one of the most known affects. Often known as a disease that starts in the hippocampus and spreads out (from the centre) into the cerebral cortex: overtime you start to lose so many neutrons, results in loss of cognitive function. One neurone connects with another neurone at a synaptic level: synapsis are gone in alzheimer cause they are otherwise preoccupied with the plaques, tangles literally kills the cell, cause affect cytoskeleton of the cell.
