Document Summary

Cycle 1 - lecture #3 - membrane biology. Plasma membrane diseases: ex: alzheimer"s, cystic fibrosis. Membrane is fluid: fluidity maintained by temperature, enzyme called desaturate and cholesterol. Animals cells have cholesterol and desturases the maintain fluidity: but we don"t need to rely on desturases too much as he keep a steady body temperature through homeostasis and cholesterol that acts as a buffer. Integral proteins: span the membrane, hydrophobic domains, proteins are recycled. Peripheral proteins: on surface of protein, bound to surface loosely, non covalent bonds. Monday, january 15, 2018: predominantly cytoplasmic, don"t just sit on membrane, shuttle. Ex: some will shuttle to do it"s job in citric cycle as well as the etc: don"t have domains. When proteins are finished their jobs, they get recycled. Don"t have a very long half life: half life is regulated in the cell. Theoretically the other molecules can cross but will that 276 hours, thus we say they cant cross the membrane.
