Quebec measles cases: what you need to know. The 10 people who contracted measles had not been vaccinated. Contracted in the u. s. at disney land in california. Immunization coverage with 1st dose of measles containing vaccines in infants. Some individuals w/ compromised immune systems cannot be vaccinated. Once vaccination rates are above 80% they are relatively contained. Herd immunity allows most of the people who are not vaccinated to not contract these diseases since other people are vaccinated. It was recognized that if milk maids had cow pox they were immune from getting small pox. A scientist injected an 8 year old boy w/ cow pox. He later injected the boy with small pox and found that he was infection free because the cow pox caused some type of immunity. They infected individuals w/ a similar, but less severe type of the pathogen. Modern vaccines use a weakened live pathogen (less common) or an empty pathogen (more common)
