Document Summary

Cells are open system (energy and matter can go in and out) Food is matter and energy (e. g. glucose, amino acids, fatty acids), where they enter the open system together. In photosynthesis, these entities are separate (photons do not have mass and are therefore only energy and not matter) Matter and energy is used to do cellular work. (take simple things and make them into more complex things, through doing work) Protein synthesis (taking amino acids and putting them together to make protein. Rna and protein breakdown due to the entropy that those reactions have (they are spontaneous processes) Entropy: energy spreading out. (e. g. if its spread out in more molecules it has more entropy). If energy is required to perform a task (put molecules together), then energy (through heat and waste) is released into the surroundings when they are broken apart. Protein synthesis is a negative (or low) entropy phenomenon. This is why cells are islands of low entropy.
