Document Summary

Kin selection explains the helpful or cooperative behaviour, not truly altruistic behaviour. Explains why conflict can arise even between closely related individuals. Cooperative and conflict can occur between individuals that are not related to one another. Genetic conflict can arise very early in life time. In mammals, between the developing embryo and the mother due to asymmetries in relatedness. From the developing embryo point of view, it is more closely related to itself than any other future offspring that its mother might produce. From the mother point of view, she ought to be dividing her parental investment evenly. In parent-offspring conflict likely to be more intense in monogamous species (mate for life with a single partner) or in promiscuous species (both sexes have many mates): monogamous species, promiscuous species, similar in both. Parent-offspring conflict is that developing embryos are greedier, and mother are more resistant to those signals of need (fetal hormones from placenta)
