Biology 1001A Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Hybrid Swarm, Reproductive Isolation, Genetic Drift
Document Summary
Name some limitations of the biological species concept. Name some differences between pre-zygotic and post- zygotic isolating mechanisms. Identify the criteria used by the biological, phylogenetic and ecological species. Biological species concept defines a species as a group of organisms that can successfully interbreed and produce fertile offspring. Phylogenetic species concept defines a species as a group of organisms bound by a unique ancestry. Ecological species concept defines a species as a group of organisms that share a distinct ecological niche. These species concepts are just three of a dozen prominent species concepts in the biological literature. Although the definition can work for species that reproduce sexually, it does not deal as well with the many species that reproduce asexually. By their approach to reproduction, whole groups of organisms in the biological kingdom sit outside the conventional definition of species. Thus, patterns of reproduction can blur the definition of species.
