Class 1 welcome & chlamydomonas as a model system. Single cell has flagella so it can swim around. Chlamydomas is a model experimental system such as yeast, e. coli, etc. Single celled eukaryotes are 10 um (bacteria is about 1um in size) Has an eyespot in the chloroplast but has nothing to do with photosynthesis (red area) Sense light so cell can move towards light (linked to flagella movement) Has all the organelle of a typical eukaryotic cell. Nothing in planet has a chloroplast and no mitochondria. Cell ribosomes (some are free and some associated with er) Under plant lineage (all photosynthetic) however it split from the tree very early on (still photosynthetic) Ability to see light and move towards light is very animal like (can sense external environment and move accordingly) Especially under stressful environments it will differentiate into plus and minus gametes. As genomes size goes up protein coding genes go up. Not every genes codes for a protein.
