Epidemic: change in disease intensity in a host population over time and space. Disease: dealing with diseases, not just the pathogen (or plant/crop) Host: organism infected (or potentially infected) by another organism. Time and space: two physical dimensions of interest: reduction in an epidemic. Change in cultural practices: rotation, destruction of host residue. Disease triangle (host [susceptibility], pathogen [virulence], environment. Agroecosystem: plants not separated by space and time (unlike nat env), uniform host genetics (nat env mixed), less complex microbial env. We measure incidence, density, severity of disease. Incidence: #/proportion of plants (or plant unit such as leaf, fruit) diseased. One way to control epidemics is: quarantine & inspection. In all of human, animal, and plant quarantines, the fundamental concept is that a public authority is empowered to establish protective barriers against the dissemination of injurious pests and pathogens. Food & agriculture organization"s aim: secure common and effective action to prevent intro of diseases of plants internationally.
