Document Summary
Invasive species: habitat alteration (loss, fragmentation, degradation) most important factor, pollution, overharvesting, climate change. Invasive species: exotic species: a species found outside of its natural range because of human activity, not all exotic species are invasive. Invasive species: an exotic species that has spread in distribution and increased in abundance. Major means of exotic species" introductions: european colonization, agriculture, horticulture, aquaculture, accidental transport, biological control. Some have been deliberate and some have been accidental. Colonization: colonists often had a desire to recreate familiar landscapes in colonized areas: bring with them familiar plants/animals to their new environment. Ballast water: accidental movement of organisms from one place to another: larger ships need to be filled with water to weight them down when they don"t have stock on board, dumps the water out when picking up load. Filling up with water from one location and dumping it into another location (can be crossing the ocean)
