Biology 2485B Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Irukandji Jellyfish, Nitrate, Endocrine Disruptor
Document Summary
Methemoglobinaemia caused by nitrate poisoning in ground water: nitrates lead to creation of methemoglobin, this is a form of hemoglobin in which the iron atoms of the heme group are ferric (fe3+) instead of ferrous. Life expectancy globally and by world regions since 1770. Over the last couple hundred years, rapid increases in life expectancy in all different parts of the world. Categories of environmental health hazards: chemical hazard, physical hazard natural disasters, sunburn, biological hazard, cultural hazard (due to changes in behaviour) obesity. Toxicology: the study of the effects of chemical hazards (poisonous substances) on humans and other organisms. Toxicity: the degree of harm a toxicant can cause: depends on the combined effect of the chemical and its quantity ( dose", any substance can be harmful if ingested in large enough quantities. Only the dose makes the poison paracelsus. Environmental toxicology deals with toxic substances that either come from, or are discharged into, the environment.
