Document Summary

Energy flows through ecosystems: the energy that drives interactions in most systems come ultimately from the sun via photosynthesis, as organisms feed on one another, this energy moves through the community, from one trophic level to another. Trophic level- the rank in the feeding hierarchy of a food chain. Biological systems (cells, organisms, ecosystems) represent islands of order in an increasingly disordered universe: they are constantly fighting entropy and the second law of thermodynamics, they achieve this by acquiring energy from external sources. Photosynthesis: light is the ultimate source of energy for most living systems, through the process of photosynthesis. These sugar molecules produced during photosynthesis provide: energy for other metabolic activities (cellular respiration and other basic metabolic activities, basic building materials for growth (adding mass to the organisms) In terrestrial ecosystems, nitrogen is the macronutrient that is limiting. In aquatic ecosystems, phosphorus is limiting: micronutrients- nutrients needed in smaller amounts.
