Looks like its controlled at a genetic level but further studies revealed more about behaviour and genes. Most aspects of animal behavior are controlled by both genes and environmental conditions. Oldfield mouse makes better burrows entrance, nest and escape hatch. Closely related typically oldfield is a climber but this particular member of that genus does make burrows. Food availability can vary greatly over time and space.
