Cell has lots of transmembrane proteins on it can fluorescently label all proteins on membrane. Then take bright laser and bleach part of proteins. To see if things move around membrane. Can other proteins move into bleached area. Rate of lateral diffusion can be measured by fluorescent recovery. Have certain amount of florescent, then bleach (think ofit as 100 0), then look for recovery and see how much of fluorescence gonna come back, in this case. ~50% coming back , this tells you 50% of the proteins are mobile, can also find out rate from this.
