Biochemistry 2280A Lecture 9: Carbohydrate Structure Oct 3
Document Summary
Questions 1-333 in course package are midterm related. Recall: sphingolipids have an amine group attaching the fatty acid to the other groups. Topic 7 learning objectives: terminology, fischer and haworth projections, polysaccharide formation, structures of storage polysaccharides. Glyceraldehyde: chiral carbon can be arranged in 2 different ways to arrange the atoms. Monosaccharides are represented by fischer projections:different molecules - stereoisomers. We see these in amino acids as well recall amino acids are predominately in l version but sugars are predominately in the d version (when we are talking about sugars we are mostly talking about d sugars) Haworth projections: we need to be able to convert between the two for exam. Notice that placing the carbon in the right position we get the last carbon on the 6th position sticking up. Not actually planar the carbons are actually in a chair position typically. Carbons 1 to 4 are the front of the hexagon.
