The branch of anthropology focusing on understanding people in the past by looking at the physical remains that they have left behind. Driven by questions that need answers, funding through grants, fieldwork is slower and more careful. A lot of time is spent in labs (more so than the field) Cultural resource management: happens ahead of development: Assess the ground before things are built. Often have to make a case for why archaeology matters. Long term perspective: helps people to realize that there are various whys to do things, discover how we got to where we are today, discover past mistakes and how to avoid making them again. Applied archaeology: helps us to understand sustainable practices used in the part to inform present day practices. Went off in search of new lands do to over population. Brought domestic animals with them into a foreign environment (not used to being overgrazed: animals ate themselves out of house and home.
