Positivism : understanding the world through science (durkheim / comte) Cross-sectional = at one point in time. Validity : the degree to which they actually measure what they claim to: internal = within lab, external = the ability to generalize research results beyond lab and into the real world. Resistance theory = working-class youth actively reject middle-class norms and values of education in favour of working class manual labour. Correspondence theory = educational forms and processes correspond to conditions and needs in the capitalist economy. Rational choice theory = individuals makes choices based on careful cost-benefit considerations. Taylorism and scientific management = shifts control of the work process from the skilled workers to the owners and managers of production relies on establishment of a detailed division of labour. Iron law of oligarchy = even in democratic organizations, rule by the many will inevitably become rule by the few.
