Representing cultures as exotic or unusual, at least unusual for those who visit, has been an essential component of tourism since the first european travelers struck out in search of the unknown. Though many nations now have local tourist traditions, the practice as we know it is deeply associated with western colonialism and imperialism. But, as the practice has spread, it has become such a commonplace in contemporary society that we seem to barely notice how freely we move across international borders until the freedom is interrupted.
