Objectives: explain the performative nature of language, give examples of how people accomplish things in the social world through language, define indexicality and explain how it works in terms of language and identity. Language use as social action: now we aren"t so concerned with what language means, but with what language does. Authority of the speaker (police officers saying you"re arrested vs. someone else) If the felicity conditions are not met, then the performative isn"t valid. Performativity | judith butler 2011: her idea is that gender is a performative phenomenon, distinction between biological sex and gender identity. We act as if, that being of a man or that being of a woman is actually an internal reality or something that is simply true about us; a fact about us. Actually, it"s a phenomenon that is being produced all the time and reproduced all the time.
