The most obvious way for populations to be removed from genetic contact is geographic separation, or allopatry. Once populations are geographically isolated from one another, they cannot interbreed, regardless of whether or not they would like to. A crucial theoretical development traces back to darwin"s other great book, the descent of man, and selection in relation to sex (1871: in this book, darwin articulates the concept of sexual selection. That is, that males and females of the same species will be subject to different selective pressures. Chromosomal inversions: a segment of a chromosome is structurally rearranged such that the segment is inserted backwards in the genetic sequence of the chromosome. What marks simply refers to as evo-devo is properly known as evolutionary development or evolutionary developmental genetics. He also introduces the term epigenetics , which refers to environmental effects that can have significant effects on the expression of genetic traits. Canalization: refers to relatively strictly constrained developmental pathways.
